The Nature Of Existence

        Belief or faith or certainty in the spirtual nature of Man proceeds from the the idea that this is not all there is, there is something more. Some people see life as a chance combination of chemicals that became proteins and amino acids that became cellular life then an aggregate of cells that then became Craig, (my neighbor), so life is dependent on the body: you have life while you have a body and the body is your life because what you see is what you get.

        If "your body is your life" were true than anything that diminished the body would diminish life. There are numerous examples, such as Andrea Bocelli and Stephen Hawking, of people whose bodies are diminished but who's life force or essence or spirit, whatever term you like, is very much flourishing and undiminished. It is observably true that the body does not determine life. If I lost an arm and a leg (let's say the IRS came and took an arm and a leg) I would not be less me - I would still be myself, my identity remains.

        The notion that your mind is your life doesn't work either. Your mind is your collected experience, similar to a long movie film or a big photo album. If you don't remember something then you are not reduced, you are not less yourself. Your mind does not define you. Your mind serves you.

        You may very well ask "Is there a point Tom?" (and I wish I had a nickel for every time I got that reaction). Yes, there is. This is not all there is. There is something more. Your life does not emanate from your body, it is the reverse. You imbue your body with life. You inhabit and animate your body. Without you, your body is a perfectly ordinary heap of meat. Your presence in your body is the quality, the essence, of your life. It is the same with your mind. You are not a thing, you are a creator of things.

        It's a matter of viewpoint, what I see to be true and what you see to be true. Speaking for myself, I have conviction and certainty that death is not an ending but a door to the next part of the journey. You are not your body, you are not your mind, there is an aspect of you that is more than what you see in the mirror or a memory of what you did yesterday, an ineffable quality that is not quantified but is just as real as everything you see and touch.

        I'm not trying to convince you of anything, I set out to say a few things to you because the nature of existence does not usually come up in conversation. My guess is that, as you have always done, you will think whatever you wish and you don't need to agree or disagree with me as you are perfectly capable of knowing what you know unassisted. OK, that's a given. For what it's worth, I have conviction and certainty that the spark of life that is your true nature is immortal and will survive past the end of the body. There is more, this is not all there is.

Looking For The Win/Win

Looking For The Win/Win

        My approach to business has been to get as much info as I can about what the person (call him "Bob") I'm talking to wants to accomplish, then work out how I can help them to get what they want. 

        The idea is that if I can help Bob then I should. Bob is better off as a result of my help. Maybe we can do business and maybe we can't right now. It takes about the same amount of time and effort to be helpful as it does to do anything else and being helpful feels better.

        Some benefits to being helpful:

        (1) I'm leaving Bob with a positive impression of me and my company.

        (2) If I've been of assistance then I may get referral business for Bob's friends and associates.

        (3) Perhaps Bob and I will do business in the future.

        What I'm looking for is a win/win where Bob benefits and I benefit.

        Not everyone shares the above viewpoint.

        There's the "Boiler Room" approach, apply any and all pressure that can be brought to bear to get the sale. Usually referred to with sports or war analogies. A sale is a "take down" or similar.

        There is setting an objective of obtaining total surrender, keep all of the benefits and leave Bob with carfare back to his office. Even if such a beat-down is successful, there will be no repeat business, there will be no referrals, and there will probably be an order cancellation on the answering machine.

Magic? Coincidence? Or What?

Magic? Coincidence? Or What?

        Over the years, there can come a time where the phone is not ringing, no one is waiting for service and the company is just putting the finishing touches on the last project on the assembly line.

        So I'll go on a big PROMOTE.

        I'll call happy Customers who have said lots of nice things about how NumberOneOnTheList.com assisted their business or got them more business or whatever is the particular quality of the work that made them happy. Call them up. (1) Can I get you to write a testimonial for me? (2) As long as we're talking here, can I offer you further services? (3) Do you have any vendors that might benefit from my fine services? (Businesses that NumberOneOnTheList.com has put on page one of Google search results may not want to recommend businesses that compete in some way, and it's a possible conflict of interest for me, so I ask for vendors).

        A down and dirty cheap and fast flyer is a 2 column Word document with some visuals (stats, charts, clip art) nicely copied 2-sided onto colored paper by FedEx Office or your favorite copier. Now the two or three testimonials gotten from happy Customers are turning into an attractive flyer and ready to go out to the appropriate mailing list.

        A second version of the same flyer is turned into HTML for an email newsletter or put into a Constant Contact newsletter - the point is to send it out to the appropriate emailing list too.

        OK, OK, so I'm making calls and mailing out a flyer and emailing a newsletter, all good ways to get the word out, it's a no-brainer to put information in front of Customers. Where's the magic? What coincidence?

        Well I'll tell you.

        More often than not, as I'm coming back from the post office after dropping off a bunch of flyers or after I finish the email newsletter and schedule it up to go out at 6:00 AM the following morning, before anybody at all outside of my offices has gotten either the flyer or the email newsletter, the phone starts to ring, business starts to walk in the door.

       I intended to get something happening and it's happening.

When Did Idleness Become A Virtue?

        The best job there is doing something that you love, something that improves not just your survival, but your family's, other people's and the world's. Doing what you like and making a positive impact.

        The worst job in the world might be sitting in a chair in an empty, windowless room, facing a big clock. No people, no computers, no paper. Just a chair, a clock and nothing to do.

        The popular notion seems to be to do as little as possible, collect the most money that can be gotten in exchange for doing as close to nothing as can be arranged, then retire to enjoy your leisure.

        A NYC Parks Department carpenter told me that he'd hang a door every six months and drive around in a city vehicle the rest of the time. I hope he was exaggerating. It sounded like he was bragging.

        Case in point:

        My NY drivers license was about to expire but the Department of Motor Vehicles would not renew my license because there was a discrepancy between their records and the Social Security Administration's records, now new Homeland Security rules prevent the DMV from renewing my license and I have to go to the Social Security Administration and resolve this.

I go to the Social Security Administration office in Jamaica, Queens. There's a line, there are five windows open with clerks to deal with the line. One clerk is on the phone, one clerk is catching up some computer entry and not taking persons off the line, one clerk is talking to a co-worker, one clerk has been talking to the same guy since I arrived (the guy isn't talking, the clerk is talking). 

        The fifth clerk is a thin young man, he's quietly singing to himself and handling one person after another with a minimum of conversation. Twice it happened that the person at the window had the wrong paperwork, this clerk directed them to the right form and told them to fill it out and come back to the front of the line. He took care of my issue in about 90 seconds while singing Bob Marley's "Rasta Man Chant" quietly.

        Guess who was the happiest employee at the Social Security Administration office in Jamaica?

Your Business Can Turn On A Dime

        I've been taking courses on L.Ron Hubbard's basic books. These books, collectively referred to as "The Basics", have been fully verified or corrected against the original source material, supplemented with glossaries and beautifully typeset and printed. There is an art of printing books and these books are aesthetic products.

        One of the realizations I had while studying the Basics is that I am not locked in to anything or stuck or set on a particular course except insofar as I consider that I am. 

        If a person is crabby in the morning and says "Don't mind me, I'm always crabby in the morning" then that is the degree to which that person is set on being crabby in the morning. 

        There is no runway needed or preparations or preconditions to changing being crabby in the morning to "Every day is an opportunity to take pleasure in making a positive difference in the world - if someone smiles back because I smile at them, the world is a tiny bit better and I can enjoy my life from the first moment I get up in the morning onward." 

        A person can change their life with a decision from one second to the next, there is no reason why not, there is nothing stopping them.

        Business goes the same way. The attitude of a business seems to me to come from the top down. All it takes is the decision that "I'm going to be a living example showing that this is the best place to work on Earth."

        There's no reason not to, no external forces preventing a business from being a great place to work.

        And if it's not all the way it should be all the time, there's nothing  stopping me or you from having things go the way we wish in the next instant.

         I have been bombarded with bad news on TV and radio, the internet and print media to where it seemed that the collapse of the American economy and the social order were inevitable. So I took steps to handle this and I'm pleased to pass these along to you.

         First, stop checking on the stock market.

 

         Next, no more news on TV, radio, the internet or in print.

         Read a book. Watch a movie.

         I predict you'll feel better in a couple of days. As soon as you observe that you are feeling better, notice that America is the most affluent country in the world with one of the highest standards of living and that our national wealth goes up a little and goes down a little but it's still here.
